Nothing new here, but it may help somebody out…
Sometimes you just need to know something that is not immediately apparent.
We frequently ask clients what Version and/or Edition of SQL Server they are running and they simply don’t know – this in itself is a mystery to me, but incomplete documentation is for another post.
There are 2 server properties that can be queried from SQL Server 2005 and 2008 that give you what you need to know:
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY(‘productversion’), SERVERPROPERTY (‘edition’)
These will give you the installed version number from which you can identify the build and SP level plus the edition which will help you to identify Standard, Enterprise, Web, etc. plus whether the instance is 32 or 64 bit.
Learn it and live it!
