Like Vodka? Like Tomato? Like a little ZING in your life?

Read, pour, drink.  This one is for you.

Here’s the advice – experiment with how spicy you like it.  Each to their own, mmmkay?  Sriracha is different to Tabasco and brings a more complex taste at the cost of the ‘raw’ heat of the little red bottles.

This recipe is faffy for sure, but it’s worth it.

Seb’s Sneaky Cheeky Bloody (Hell) Mary (for one, multiply out to ‘jug up’)

Ingredients You Need:

  • 2 shots Good Vodka, but don’t go nuts (Goose = NO, Ketel One = YES)
  • 200ml Tomato Juice (fresh is best, but hey-ho)
  • Generous pinch Celery Salt
  • Generous pinch Fresh Ground Black Pepper
  • Squirt Sriracha Hot Sauce (mad, right?)
  • 4-6 dashes of Worcestershire Sauce (L&P the US version is the best)
  • Medium Stick o’ Celery (with leaves)
  • 2 Pimento stuffed Olives (large as you can find)
  • 1 Slice o’ Lemon (fresh, not preserved or ‘bar style’)
  • 1/4 shot Lemon Juice
  • Ice Cubes
  • 1/2 shot Amontillado Sherry

Gear You’ll Need:

  • Large mixing glass (half a Boston would be perfect)
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Long mixing spoon
  • Bar measuring cup
  • Tall, robust glass to serve
  • Cocktail stick(s)

How To Make It:

  1. Do not drink the Vodka!
  2. Put plenty ice in the mixing glass, pour the Vodka in, give it a quick stir
  3. Add the tomato juice and all the other bits, except the celery stick, lemon slice and olives
  4. Gently muddle up with the spoon – don’t beat the shit out of it
  5. Add 2 or 3 ice cubes to the serving glass
  6. Strain into the serving glass until 6/8ths full
  7. Pierce the two olives onto a cocktail stick and then into the celery stick (so it kinda looks like a 7 or a Police baton!)
  8. Gently plonk the celery/olive baton into the glass so the celery rests on the wall of the glass and the cocktail stick rests on the opposite rim
  9. Float the Sherry into the top
  10. Garnish with the lemon slice
  11. Enjoy

Worktop Tips:

  • Do not drink the Vodka!
  • Chill the Sherry before you float it
    • don’t lose any sleep if it doesn’t sit neatly on the top – this will depend on the consistency of your tomato juice
  • You can ‘dirty’ this with a 1/8 shot of olive brine if you like to season the tomato juice even more

Wine Pairing:

You’ve got to be kidding me?  Ok. Chase with a shot of Vodka and Sriracha, coz if you’re pairing a Bloody Mary then you’re clearly in a dark place…
