One of the big asks of Azure in recent times has been the ability to gain direct access to replicas of data held in Azure geo-replicated storage (officially named Geographically Redundant Storage or “GRS”).
This makes the downtime associated to Azure DC failure less impactful as there is no wait to get access to data held in GRS if your primary DC is down.
As yet, we can’t write to the replica (that’s a complex piece of functionality to enable, for sure) but being given read access to objects in Azure storage sure is a step in the right direction.
