Amazon has lifted the drop cloth on WorkMail, the first piece of its rumoured Office 365 and Google Apps compete play.

An email and calendar app, WorkMail is a sharp arrow aimed squarely at the heart of Microsoft and Google and is the latest element of Amazon’s ever-strengthening Cloud portfolio.

With customer managed encryption (for both over the wire and at rest encryption services) powered by Amazon KMS this shot at Microsoft (let’s face it, they’re the target here) looks viable and will appeal to the folks that don’t buy into the Microsoft Cloud vision or just plain dislike the outfit from Redmond.

Competitively priced (from $4 per month per 50GB mailbox) it will be interesting to see how adoption of this new service picks up in the face of the flourishing Office 365 offering.

I guess we’ll be watching this space!
