Platform as a Service or PaaS, is the provision of application development, deployment and hosting resources from within a service provider Cloud enabling customers to deliver rapidly deployable, highly scalable solutions for use as in-house systems or for resale as SaaS applications.

PaaS facilitates rapid development and deployment of solutions as PaaS service providers typically provide tooling, templates and libraries that can be readily assembled into working services without detailed knowledge of software/solution development, service deployment or infrastructure design, management and hosting.  Coupled to Cloud benefits such as self-service management of resources and metered billing, PaaS provides simple, cost manageable access to the developer ready Cloud, historically the bastion of large, wealthy organisations to customers of all sizes.

Examples include: Azure Web Sites, AWS Elastic Beanstalk and IBM Bluemix.
