From the #Cloud: 3 Paragraphs Series – What is #IaaS?

By | January 9, 2015

Infrastructure as a Service or IaaS is the provision of interconnected server, storage, network and service management infrastructure from within a vendor’s Cloud for remote consumption by customers.

Typically positioned either as an augmentation or a replacement for traditional on-premises IT, IaaS provides the benefits of Cloud computing such as elasticity, metered billing, 3rd party management (of the underlying platform) and self-service provisioning & management whilst retaining benefits historically associated to traditional IT such as resource isolation, full control of resources from the operating system up and environmental familiarity.

From the consumers perspective, IaaS provides an operations ready Cloud environment, abstracted from the underlying compute and storage platform, that is ready to host data and application tiers as required.
